I’m smiling this big for a reason. I just discovered eSalon and found an easy way to save $600 a year by touching up my roots at home instead of at the salon. eSalon gives you professional hair color at home with ease! I don’t share a ton of products and services with you guys, but this one is too good not to. Using eSalon just once saved me over $100 in one fell swoop. That’s not like cutting the cable bill $5/month, that’s real savings!

The entire process was amazingly easy and provided truly professional results. I realized that if I do a root touch up at home in between my regular hair highlighting appointments, that one time savings will really add up over the year! Come take a look at my behind the scenes process, along with before and after photos, and I know you’ll be as excited as I am! Here’s a before shot:

I am 40+ and getting grayer every day. Beginning about 4 weeks after I get my hair done, I start watching those gray roots come in along with my naturally drab color. Sigh. I open up my calendar to see how long before my next appointment. 4 more weeks, double sigh! Two weeks later, my kids start commenting on how bad my hair is getting. Ack! A week after that, I call my hair stylist to see if they can squeeze me in early. Rats! I have to wait.

When I finally make it into the salon for my appointment, I am beyond relieved and thrilled to get my hair done! At the end, I WANT to schedule my next appointment 6 weeks later, but I end up making it 8 weeks later to save myself money. Of course, I then regret that decision when I get to this point again. I cringe seeing the photo below. Did I walk around town like that?

When eSalon contacted me asking if I would try their online at home color service, I was skeptical. Those boxes at the drugstore have always scared me. They assured me it wasn’t like that and would be like getting professional hair color at home. Honestly, I thought there was no way eSalon would get my color right over email and with website info. But, I needed color badly. I figured why not give it a whirl. I would be one happy camper if I learned how to get professional hair color at home with ease.

In the end, eSalon was right, the color was spot on! At $20, the touch-up is a total steal. Better yet, I get to offer it to you for $10! Then the service and follow up I received about the color afterward was outstanding. Did I want to tweak it? The folks at eSalon know their stuff. Also, the entire process was simple!

First, you go through a detailed questionnaire about what you want and what your current color is. You upload a few photos and they contact you with any questions. Then, you receive a box including the your own custom color with detailed instructions that walk you through the entire process.  This was so reassuring to me as I have never colored my hair at home.

Everything you need for professional hair color at home comes in the box (except for clips for your hair and a towel for your shoulders). eSalon includes stain guard and stain remover as well. You begin by mixing up your customized color with an activator. These are salon quality ingredients, too! Next, pin up your hair into four sections and started painting away. The front sections of my hair were very easy to do.  Make sure you get the strands around your face. I managed to miss the very front strands and some around my temple, which I won’t miss next time!

After the front, you hit the back. I have to admit that when it came to the back of my head, I ended up asking my friend who was photographing to help me finish up. Once you get comfortable doing it at home, I don’t think this will be necessary. But, honestly, I enjoyed doing it with a pal. Make a girls night with a friend, get professional hair color at home, blow each other’s hair out, and hit the town for a marg when complete!

It took my hair 30 minutes to process. After that, I jumped in the shower, mixed the rest of the color through my hair, let it sit for a few minutes, rinsed and I was done! The results impressed me. No need to go back to the salon for another six weeks and money in my pocket!

To my amazement, I received an email a few days later asking if the color worked and if I needed to change it at all. eSalon keeps notes on my color and will adjust it as needed, keeping track of it all. You can even speak to them on the phone if you want!

This post was sponsored by eSalon, however, all opinions are my own.  I certainly wouldn’t have shared the photos if it had bombed!  Love you guys!

  1. I have only had my hair done in a salon once, and it was a birthday gift (got a shampoo a cut and a highlight). I’ve done my own hair and roots for many many years, salon dyes are an expense I just can’t afford. box dyes are pretty easy, its nothing once you get used to it. The hardest part is finding the 20 minutes to do it. I too am over 40, and the girl who cuts my hair (cuts are WAAAY cheaper than a dye) says without the color, I’d be completely Jamie-Lee-Curtis-gray. I will look into this esalon, looks like something I might be interested in. Thanks for sharing!!

    • Thanks so much for sharing your experience. It is crazy expensive to do it in the salon! You should try eSalon for sure, it was pretty easy and comes right to your door and was truly customized. Its so nice to be able to talk to someone!

I’ll look into this! Thanks for sharing! I have to color every 4 weeks. It fades like crazy in between and I’m REALLY grey at this point. I really don’t like it on me. I do a highlight to break up the color while I’m covering grey and making the strands dark again. But…the last time I bought the box color in the store it was $18 so why not try a professional color? I would love to have my stylist do it for me, but it’s just not in the budget right now.

    • Your welcome! I don’t like grey either. It worked pretty well and they did match my color almost perfectly!
