What you guys have all been asking for is finally here–an arm knit blanket tutorial! This arm knit blanket is chunky and over-sized and fabulous in every way! The tutorial is in a video format filmed by Creativebug. I think you are going to love it. Trust me when I say this blanket is as soft and cushy as it appears. It would grace any room and will fit perfectly on your bed, your favorite reading chair or the best tv watching couch in your house. Plus, I get to giveaway three 6-month subscriptions to Creativebug! See the details below.
This blanket is done in garter stitch. In arm knitting, this means you are knitting one direction and purling the other direction. Learning how to purl opens up all sorts of possibilities for things you can make with arm knitting.
In the video, I also provide all sorts of helpful advice, insight and tips on how to make your arm knitting stitches tight so the whole blanket looks lofty and luscious and fresh off the needles, even though it was done uber fast on your arms. I go over common problems and ways to troubleshoot your arm knitting dilemmas. If you want to start off with a slightly easier entry-level project, you can try my arm knit cowl photo tutorial here on my blog or you can buy the handy instant downloadable PDF on Etsy. Or, if you are a video learner, you can take my arm knit cowl video tutorial class on Creativebug.
I’m so excited for you all to learn how to purl. Then, I can’t wait to show you the projects from my book, Knitting Without Needles, which is coming out September 2015. If you want to be kept up to date on all the latest book related details, sign up for my newsletter here. And, if you make the blanket or one of the cowls, make sure to tag #myflaxandtwine on Instagram. I want to see your beautiful projects.
Now, to the best part, I’m also here to give away not one, not two, but THREE 6-month subscriptions to Creativebug. With that, not only will you get my class for free, but you will get all of Creativebug’s crafty, amazing library of tutorials at your fingertips! All you have to do is follow me on Instagram @flaxandtwine, tag two people there and leave me a comment below about where you would put your treasured, new cozy throw. I will announce the winners – three of them! on Friday, so let all your friends know!

Yessss! I have spent the past week making your arm knit cowl scarves! It has been such a fun new hobby, and I have been hoping you’d come out with an arm knit blanket video soon. Can’t wait to try it!!
Samantha says
What do you mean, where would I put it? AROUND ME OF COURSE 😀 and never take it off!! It looks so beautiful! Although I think my sister would love it for her coming baby, so giving it to her would probably be nicer than keeping it all to myself 🙂 Thanks for the giveaway! It’s awesome!

Hi! I left a comment yesterday using my instagram “handle,” but I don’t see it. Trying again w/ my real name. Anyhoo-
I would LOVE to learn to make this blanket so I can drape it over the back of our couch when we finally move into our new home. I would keep it far away from my sweet-but-smelly dog and his shedding. This blanket is beautiful, and I hope to make one of my own. : )

Anne, thank you for giving us a chance to win.
I’ve redeemed by Creative Bug subscription
And have watched your great video through the part where you show how to put our work on and off a ‘stitch’ holder.
Must find a good source for appropriate yarn then I’ll be on my way.
Am excited to get started

Super Yay, Gerry. You’ve brought me so much joy with all your enthusiasm! I hope you adore your new blanket. Make sure you post a photo of it on Instagram with the tag #myflaxandtwine 😉
GerryART says
Anne, I picked up some super bulky at a box store just to get started.
My stitches are much looser than I’d like so
have frogged a couple of times in order to get some practice in
before I go big time for a snapshot worthy blanket.
Your instructive video is great!
Once I get going it does seem intuitive
since I am an avid knitter, perhaps that helps.
However, my arms are the biggest needle I’ve ever used!! LOL LOL LOL

Is this knit in stockinette stitch? Isn’t garter stitch when you knit back and forth (for right and wrong sides)? Not that it matters really. It’s a beautiful blanket! I love arm knitting.
flaxandtwine says
Hi Ashely, its different in arm knitting. You’re correct that inn traditional knitting, garter stitch is when you knit back and forth for right and wrong sides. To do this for arm knitting, because you don’t turn the work around, you need to knit 1 row, purl 1 row to get the same effect.

I’m so glad someone asked this (and you replied!) because I was thinking the same exact thing. I’m new to knitting so I knew I had to be missing something 🙂
Lindsay says
What kind of yarn did you use? Please and thank you.
Lindsay
flaxandtwine says
HI Lindsay, The yarn is Cascade Magnum. I used three skeins at a time.

One day I would love to put this in my library in my future home, surrounded by books cuddled in a big comfy chair. For now though, I’ll put it in my room to wrap up in while I’m reading and drinking my tea! I’ve already arm knitted a scarf and I can’t wait to expand my new found skills on all these new innovative ideas!
flaxandtwine says
Hi Ariel, Thanks for your note. I’m so excited for you to create your big comfy blanket! xo
Cortney says
Hello, I’m wanting to try this arm knit blanket because it is GORGEOUS! If it works out I want to do them as christmas gifts!!! I was wondering about how much it is to make? Is there an off brand yarn you would recommend that would make it more affordable?
flaxandtwine says
Hi Cortney,
What a great and loving idea! Yes, you can start with something less expensive. I would look for Loops N Threads Cozy Wool Super Bulky at your local craft store, such as Michael’s. Or, try Lion Brand Thick n Quick Super Bulky.
