Head Over Heels . . . Spring Showers

Spring Showers
1) Pink Cloud from Cocoa Jackson via Kate Cho, originally pinned by Tururu
2) Raindrop Blouse from swirlyarts via femke dik
3) Cloud Plate from Opera Gliniana
4) Dee Teardrop Earrings from Nordstrom
5) Cloud and Spot 3 from Paper Moon Illustration
6) Raindrop Tote from Harvest Textiles as featured on Milk Tooth's Rain

Lots and lots of raindrops and clouds everywhere I look.  I'm hopeful of what all these showers have to bring us this spring, but can't say that raindrops or clouds are as catchy a motif as stars, can you? Still, lots of cute raindrops are a-fallin' . . .

DIY Photo Light Box - A Finish Fifty Project

Did you ever wonder how people get those beautiful endless finishes in their photos? White and bright shots of their products?  This is how (or, at least it is an inexpensive diy substitute). By taking photos inside a box that diffuses natural light from all sides, you can remove shadows and give a white, magazine-like finish to your photos.

I first learned how to make a light box from Alessandra Cave, a beautiful photographer, from whom I took a great class at the Makerie, a lovely retreat in Boulder, CO.  I built the first light box for my jewelry tutorials, 24 Days of Glam. Taking photos using the box seriously elevated the level of and look of this this blog as a whole.

My old light box had died a slow death in Boulder and was not worth moving. Making a new one landed on my Finish Fifty list the minute we walked in the door of our new house. I kept putting off building it, though. I tried to take photos every which way in an attempt to get good shots without it–a frustrating proposition.

The box is inexpensive to make. It's simply a cardboard box, white paperboard and some tissue paper. My excuses piled up–I don't have the right size box (um, hello, I just moved) or I couldn't find the tissue paper, (again, with the move). But truly, the light box is so simple and fast to make and the impact on photo quality is SO enormous, I have no idea why I waited. So, here is project 3 from my Finish Fifty list along with a full tutorial.  You can see complete Finish Fifty projects here.

Have fun with this!

DIY Photo Light Box Tutorial:

Materials:
Cardboard box
Tissue paper
Craft knife
Packing tape
White posterboard (should be at least 30% longer than the box length)

Cut off the tops of the box.

Cut out a rectangle 1" shy of sides on three of the four sides of the box.
 Pop out the side
Box should look like this after all three sides are cut.
Piece together tissue paper with packing tape to a size large enough to cover one side of the box.
Attach tissue paper to each open side of the box with packing tape.
It should look like this after you cover all three sides.
Cut white poster board the width of the box.
Place the poster board in the box such that it curves inside the box.
Place object inside box at flat part of cardboard.  Place box in as much light as possible. Take photos.
Cropped with a little brightening and voila!
Here is another side by side to compare.

Mid-Make 2.25.2013

Today, I am working with these materials. I was planning on doing an upcoming hoop earring DIY in neon pink and black (that was what was on my list, anyway), but somehow when I went to my tub of embroidery thread to pick out colors, this is what came up. I love these colors together. Was I inadvertently inspired by this?  Just a teaser today, though, tutorial coming up this week.

Sandy has been at the NFL Combine in Indianapolis for the past week–which is where the college players go to prove themselves worthy of a high pick in the draft. It was just me and the kiddos this weekend. We had a lovely, rainy, muddy hike together on Saturday and found this stone along the way. To me, this photo captures our imperfect march towards our new and different life here in Baltimore, one in which Sandy/Daddy isn't around as much as we are used to. We are navigating and muddling our way through, though. Yes, it will be a little mucky, but the four of us, at least we are doing it together.
I hope you all had a happy weekend.  Here's to a productive week!

Mid-Make: Laar Sweater

Lately, I've been keeping myself busy knitting a sweater. It is Laar by Gudrun Johnston–a pattern out of The Shetland Trader.  I'm using some gorgeous Jill Draper Aurora yarn in Paprika.  Pretty, pretty.

This sweater has been in my project list for over two and a half years. It landed there after meeting Gudrun at Squam in 2011. I knew it would be a big project so it was a tad daunting. Also, because it is someone else's pattern, it didn't seem part of legitimate "blog work."  I've decided that I need to get over that. For these reasons, I wanted this sweater to be one of the first projects I tackled in my Finish Fifty pile. A couple of MadMen Season 5 DVDs this weekend helped me make a good dent.  yay!

In all my knitting, this is only the second sweater I've made for ME since I was 7.  Feels rather indulgent, in a good way. What did you work on this weekend?

Head Over Heels for . . .

1) El Rey Hobo bag by Free People
2) Alpaca Boa Jacket by Antena
3) Leg Slouchers (free knitting pattern) on Petite Purls by Melynda Bernardi
4) Throw Pillows shot by Petra Bindel for MUUTO
5) Modern Ombre Triangle Quilt (free quilt pattern) by see kate sew
6) Tasseled Voile Circle Scarf by Diane Von Furstenberg for Net-A-Porter

I admit it, I've become a Pinterest-aholic. I spend more than my fair share of time perusing images there. Pinterest has truly become my junk tv (yes, at least an hour a day), except that I find it so much more inspirational. I just love to look and look and look. All the color, line, texture and imagery feeds me. I just have to be careful to not be dragged into the comparison blues. Used in the right way, Pinterest becomes a tool to shape your aesthetic and fine tune your creative voice. I'm starting a new series to share some of the beautiful objects, tutorials, patterns and trends I'm seeing. It's called Head Over Heels.  Enjoy!

Super Bowl Champion Ravens 2012!

Oh, what a weekend!!! The Ravens won the Super Bowl. My husband, my family and all of Baltimore are over the moon! Here I am holding the Vince Lombardi trophy, for real! If you had said that THIS is how my whole Baltimore adventure would get kicked off, I never would have believed you. Just to update you late-comers, my husband is the Director of Football Analytics for the Ravens, think "moneyball" for football.

I adored the Super Bowl weekend in New Orleans for so many reasons. Not all of you are football fans, I know, but bear with me. It has all been quite special. First and foremost, my husband, who has been working 80+hour weeks since we arrived in Baltimore in July/Aug, finally got some quality, vacation time with the kids and with me. The trip would have been worth it for that alone. What a joy to hear their laughter and see their smiling faces as we explored the city–WWII museum, the Garden District, the French Quarter, beignets at Cafe Du Monde, trolley trips, and more.

Second of all, I got to spend time in one of my favorite cities in the whole world. I've now been to New Orleans three times, all post-Katrina, and I love it. I don't think I've been to a city in the U.S. with more character than New Orleans. The people couldn't be lovelier–welcoming, friendly, and so happy to have you visiting. I like to get up really early and go on a little photo walkabouts when I'm there. You can see my photo-essay from last year when we went for the BCS Championship right here. What a feast for the eyes–the music, the iron work, the old cable cars, the brick-paved walkways, the cobblestone streets. I feel like I could walk through that town forever.

Green growth pops out of the urban decay. Detail presents itself in the least expected of places. Decorations, celebration and music abound everywhere you look. What better locale for a championship football game and celebration?

Though Sandy and I stayed at the team hotel, the kids shacked up with their Pappy in a gorgeous flat in the Garden District right across from the Lexington Cemetery. It was a short and fun trolley away from downtown where we were. Many thanks to Sandy's dad and girlfriend who gave Sandy and I some fun nights and some lazy mornings!
As if just the weekend weren't enough, then comes the game itself, which was a heart-attack-inducing, nail-biter of a game. But, the Ravens and Flacco got the job done. I must say, I never would have thought that football could become so important to me, but it has. I had no idea about the level of hard work and dedication that goes into an NFL football team. The amount of time and effort the Ravens organization puts in to everything it does astounds me. I burst with pride counting my husband amongst them.

I wanted to share some of the photos I took on the parade day once we got back to New Orleans. I was so impressed by the excitement of the team, the players and the town. The stadium held 100,000 people, and 200,000 more came to march in the parade.

John Harbaugh is a magnificent, team-oriented coach who has years of success in front of him. Charming and kind, smart and passionate, he will be the backbone of this team going forward.

I loved catching these players happy faces! This is Ed Reed and his son on your left and Torrey Smith and Anquan Boldin on your right.  All three such talented, amazing, dedicated players.
Here is Ray Lewis saying goodbye.
I got a couple behind the scenes photos too, which I will treasure. Could Joe Flacco and his little baby boy be cuter with the Vince Lombardi trophy?
I wasn't sure how this whole Baltimore adventure would go, but I'm certainly thrilled with the way it has started :)
'Till next season!
