Martha Stewart Living Radio - Costume Talk

Really I don’t know what to say . . . what do you say when you get contacted by anything Martha Stewart – Wahhooooo! I’m excited to announce that I’ll be on Martha Stewart Living Radio on Sirius XM Satellite Radio this Wednesday at 3:30 Eastern. The show is Living Today and I’ll be interviewed by Thomas P. Farley who blogs at WhatMannersMost.com. I’m giddy just thinking about it.
I’ll be talking about DIY Halloween Costumes, like these that I created for and teach you how to make in my online Craftsy course The Costume Box. I’ll be discussing some of the basics you should think about as you bring a costume from your imagination to reality.
Truly, making this collection of costumes and designing all the finer details is something for which I am very proud. Costumes should hold a special bit of magic, something that automatically sparks adventure and imaginary play. I love costumes that are imbued with character the second they are donned by children, yet still are open ended enough for the children to weave their own stories.
Watching my children leap around saving animals, crossing lava pools, defeating dread lords, becoming companions seeking treasure all because of costumes that came from my hands never ceases to give me a thrill. I believe that children recognize when something is unique and beautiful. The design and graceful nature of a costume percolates a sense of excitement and thrill in their little brains that store-bought, disneyfied, plastic, cheaply-made costumes just cannot do.

I look forward to sharing more of my thoughts about handmade costumes with you on Wednesday. I hope you can join me. If you want to listen to my interview but you don’t have Sirius XM radio, you can sign up for a free 7-day trial here. If you want to learn to make all the lovely costume pieces here, check out my course on craftsy.com.

Happy Halloween Costuming to you! My kids want more costumes for Halloween, by the way. I think we have a bunny, Mad-Eye Moody (of Harry Potter fame) and a Lego Ninja coming right up!
